The signs of impending famine in Afghanistan are multiplying. Very worrying data from major cities collected by @SavetheChildren @SaveUKNews savethechildren.net/news/afghanist… For broader context of impending financial crisis, see Chartbook #35. adamtooze.substack.com/p/chartbook-35…

Financial sanctions are last resort of West v. Taliban. But what is logic? Provoke a humanitarian crisis so large Afghanistan can’t be governed? Gamble that Taliban actually care about the economy & then threaten to crush it? Both are totally perverse. adamtooze.substack.com/p/chartbook-35… https://t.co/ixmBNK1jI4
Thinking through the emergency in Afghanistan it may be helpful to think of three distinct crises: (1) Political/military/security (2) Humanitarian/refugee/food (3) Sudden stop macro(financial) shock to urban economy. With all 3 compounding each other. adamtooze.substack.com/p/chartbook-35… https://t.co/6IZGsyAnY6

@sajjadhaider @MohsinAmin_ I think it is an entirely appropriate thing too. Terrible only when it is suddenly cut off. My critique is definitely not of the deficit but of the willingness of Western powers to use it as a tool of influence. Can you connect me to Dawn journalists?

@jaylyall_red5 Point well taken, but right now I figure the priority is current concessional funding rather than bona fide FDI. Even under previous regime FDI was a bit of a mirage.
@ddayen @sam_a_bell This is a really important question. Can one ever ignore tactics? Especially in US on climate. On top of reconciliation and Fed I would add midterms and offering points of attack to GOP.
Im no Afghanistan expert. But looking at huge trade imbalance, key dependencies for food, power, petrol, food insecurity, malnutrition, drought there is a disaster in the making unless foreign funding can be resumed quickly. @ddayen @sam_a_bell Dont know your position David. Mine was purely tactical. Pick your fights. Use Powell as a shield to get fiscal/infrastructure/regulation done with minimum fuss. Dont open a new front by trying to green fed. I know folks differ over this.
