The World Bank – an agency we tend of think of as being close to apex of global monetary hierarchy – has a bond market rating, which it cares about intensely. It's odd when you think about. And it really matters. Chartbook on Shutdown #3 digs in. adamtooze.substack.com/p/chartbook-on… https://t.co/uOq8pJP7Wv
@leopoldasch @matthewstoller The F35 whatever its merits and whatever its hypothetical role is a staggering enterprise: $1.75 trillion, 65 years plus …. The biggest product development/deployment of anything ever.
@leopoldasch @matthewstoller Hi Leo I think you will see that I actually avoid the direct comparisons of spending with China. I have been taught lessons about that. Instead I focus on the specific programs and their implications. And try to convey just how mind-blowing they are.
@leopoldasch @matthewstoller Yup. All the action in the PPP adjustment is in the wages component I think. Thats what pushes the Chinese numbers up towards the US. I may be wrong.
@simonjjacobson @GreySmithereens You should have seen the first drafts of that piece!
@leopoldasch @matthewstoller @mattyglesias The aim here is first and foremost to capture what might actually be going on, to recognize the implications of what they seem to be up to …
@DdTABEI @GreySmithereens At this stage we just have to contemplate the possibility that that is the game plan.
@matthewstoller @leopoldasch @mattyglesias My aim even more modest than that. More descriptive: “Wake up, smell coffee folks, there are a bunch of people with their hands on levers of US power who are attempting this ….”. It is kinda stunning and it will likely affect the whole world.
@leopoldasch @matthewstoller Of course. But the essay IS about the self-conception of the US military.
@leopoldasch @matthewstoller The “offset” language relies precisely on that kind of thinking and in the “second offset” period, as you know, the borrowing from Blitzkrieg is direct. More to come in Chartbook next week.
@leopoldasch @matthewstoller The PPP adjustment has the effect that it does largely through military salaries i.e. the labour component, which is the bit that matters least.
@leopoldasch @matthewstoller That’s precisely what I AM hinting at here. A kind of military voluntarism is where you end up at.

@matthewstoller Point is that strategic shift is deliberate. Long time in works. Involves a lot of spending. High tech weapons with global reach. Has serious implications for global tech/supply chains. Involves a rethink of geopolitical implications of globalization and global Econ growth.
@matthewstoller I shouldn’t have gone there. Lets set that issue aside.
@matthewstoller In this piece I was not taking a view either way. My objection is to folks who think Afghanistan betoken a post-American world and dont appreciate the far-reaching implications of America’s new strategic stance.

@matthewstoller ahhhh…. Now I see where you are coming from. Let me read this and digest. Just done 6 hours of back to back interviews. Need a break.
@matthewstoller Hi Matt. Big organization. A lot of snafus. No doubt same in other militaries. So what. Sorry …
@matthewstoller Hi Matt no it isn’t self-nullifying. US spending is a blunt instrument. But it is massive and it shapes a strategic balance.
@matthewstoller what is your narrative about the surgical strike on Chinese tech over the last 2-3 years?
