@policytensor @M_C_Klein Dont disagree at all. In a different context I would have made that point explicitly. You convinced me on this entirely.
@grimmer_solem Great book. Truly fascinating. Will link to it next week.

@leee_harris @PrincetonUPress And her's is some kind of double bluff. She says she is "showing not telling", but, in fact, book is studded with so many “tells”! It is almost like a conceptual algebra with lots of QED passages. It is almost musical (One of her analogies) with refrains. Dont fight it, I figure.
@leee_harris @PrincetonUPress 🙂 On the second reading I am enjoying it almost entirely metaphorically. Its like a lush conceptual and methodological toolkit.
@KatharinaPistor @PrincetonUPress Oh Katherina have it as an xmas present! Its mind-blowing. You will love it … I’m pretty sure. H/t @nina_econ

Far from 1914 neatly aligning democracies v. Autocracies, advanced v. backward combatants, an essential driver of mobilization was fact that smart progressive people could make arguments for/against both sides. How you read 1914 is crucial to orientating yourself in 20th century. In Chartbook #57 I argue for “age of imperialism” as crucial frame, stressing novelty, violence and pressure of historicity. V. More generalized “clash of Empires” or hegemonic crisis. adamtooze.substack.com/p/chartbook-57… https://t.co/T1fMyrh7RT
